So wait, what games do you play?

Good question!  It's also a tad difficult to answer.  See, in theory, I will play any card game except for a few.  Mostly, it's a matter of "have I played this yet?"  If not, I'll definitely play.  If so... likely I keep playing.

For reference, here is what I played last year (2015), and how often:

Anachronism - 2
Android: Netrunner - 81
Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn - 1
Babylon 5 - 2
Battleground Fantasy/Historical Warfare - 1
Call of Cthulhu LCG - 3
City of Heroes CCG - 2
Doomtown: Reloaded - 27
Dragon Ball Z - 17
Elemental Clash - 2
Epic Card Game - 7
Frontline General: Spearpoint - 3
Galactic Empires - 1
Game of Thrones 1st Edition - 1
Game of Thrones 2nd Edition - 6
Gridiron Fantasy Football - 1
High Command - 1
Legend of the Five Rings - 59
Lord of the Rings LCG - 16
Lord of the Rings CCG - 1
Magic: The Gathering - 12
Marvel VS 2PCG - 1
Middle-Earth CCG - 1
My Little Pony CCG - 1
Ophidian 2350 - 1
Romance of the Nine Empires - 1
Shadowfist - 5
Siege Warfare - 3
Star Trek CCG 1E - 2
Star Trek CCG 2E - 5
Star Trek Card Game - 1
Star Wars CCG - 1
Star Wars LCG - 10
Tomb Raider - 1
Warhammer 40K: Conquest - 38
Warhammer: Invasion - 1
WARS TCG - 1
Weis Schwarz - 3
Wheel of Time CCG - 2
X-Files CCG - 1

Quite a list, eh?  This year, I'll likely play most of these again... in addition to other games.  Also, you may disagree with my classification of some of these as card games. Well, perhaps I can convince you at a later date.

So perhaps the easier thing will be to describe which games I don't play, and won't play again.  The list isn't long.
  • Powercardz/Spawn Powercardz - I played this quite a bit as a kid.  It's mechanics, I recognize now, were terrible.  Simple, and not really much of a game.
  • Hyborian Gates - Was this even a game?  I think purchasing this really was just enjoying the great art (and awful cropping).  The game itself (yes, I managed to figure out the rules) was just awful.
  • Spellfire - I haven't played this in a LOOOOONG time, but I have no positive memories of having done so.  I believe some of my complaints were actually addressed, but this still wasn't enjoyable enough to bother with.
  • Weis Schwarz (new addition to this list for 2016) - Cas and I gave this a shot this past year, but the game was extremely weak. The climax cards add an unpleasant level of variance to the game, and although part of the mechanics are meant to address the Runaway Leader syndrome, it doesn't do quite enough to make up the gap.  If I manage to get enough pieces together to swing for the fence, and I hit a climax card, I'm annoyed.  If I don't... that's tough to recover from.  It was far too simple for us, even without this.
  • Gridiron Fantasy Football (new addition to this list for 2016) - The mechanics of this game weren't particularly bad, but the game dragged unbearably, and at some point, I'd rather just play something else.

My Card Gaming, Week Ending 5/28/2016

Games played:
  • Netrunner - 2 games.  League match against BK.  Played Cybernetics Division against his Edward Kim deck, and got crushed.  We switched, and I beat him with his Edward Kim deck.  My first attempt at Cybernetics Division... not so good.
  • WARS TCG - 1 game with Joey, playing out of the 1st set starters.  Got a feel for some strategy, and also had a good time (I also ended up winning)
  • L5R - 1 game.  Taught the game to Ben J, using the Phoenix starter against the Mantis starter.  It's not a very good matchup, but I did put up a fight until the end, and I think the game has captured his interest.
  • Pokémon - 2 games.  I took a starter deck against Joey who was running some deck using cards from previous expansions.  It was not close at all.
  • Epic Card Game - 5 games.  Trying my hand at constructing some decks, so played some games against myself.  One of my decks seems to be working pretty well.  The other one... not so much.  I may need to grab some of the new packs (I only own one of each so far).
  • Magic: The Gathering - 11 games.  Played a lot of games of Commander with E.
New acquisitions:
  • Two starter decks for Blood Wars.
  • Two starter decks for the Shadowrun CCG.
  • True Steel (Game of Thrones LCG).
  • Legions of Death (Warhammer 40K: Conquest LCG)
  • The Liberated Mind (Netrunner LCG)
Good mix of purchasing and playing.  Have a Conquest tournament this upcoming Tuesday, so wish me luck!

Upcoming series of articles (Back Issues)

Starting Monday, I am going to put up a series of articles covering an important piece of the card game hobby's history: Gaming Magazines.

Soon after I got into Magic, I discovered Inquest (later Inquest Gamer), and was hooked.  Not only was it generally an entertaining read, but the strategies contained inside the covers of each issue were invaluable to improving the quality of my play and deck building.

In today's world with easy internet access, this sort of publication is not particularly needed.  Magic has many communities that cover every aspect of the game with daily updates.  Many of FFG's LCGs have very active online communities, and would not be properly served by this format.

However, for dead CCGs, such communities do not particularly exist.  And although I don't expect this to change, I think having some access to the information that was printed on these pages would be a great service to people interested in getting into various older card games.

Therefore, I will be going through issues of various magazines, writing a few notes about what was in each issue, putting most of the decks included on this blog, and with luck, somebody other than myself finds some value in these articles.  Note that I will not post scans of the issues themselves (I don't believe that to be legal), but the deck lists and perhaps various other things will make their way onto the blog.

I do not expect I will include much of the content from Magic: The Gathering articles on the blog- as I said, Magic has plenty of content producers out there, for all formats, even the formats that would be legal at the time of these magazines' publication.  If something particularly noteworthy shows up, however, I will make sure it's included.

I will start with Inquest Gamer and Scrye magazines.  In a similar vein to the previous paragraph, I don't expect I'll have much reason to put Duelist articles on here- there's so much MTG info out there, I'm not really adding anything by copying that stuff on here.

My Card Gaming, Week Ending 5/21/16

Games played:
Netrunner - 9 games.  Played a lot of this during the week.  Think I won all games  I played, and will likely never use HB: EtF, Whizzard, Palana Foods, and The Professor.
Doomtown: Reloaded - 2 games.  Both using Abram's Crusaders (1 win, 1 loss).

New acquisitions:
Starters for World of Warcraft CCG, Fantasy Adventures, and Magi-Nation

Played more than I purchased for once!  I really need to get some non-Netrunner games in.

Brief Netrunner Tournament Report from 5/5/16

On May 5th, I played in a Netrunner tournament at Cardboard Gaming in Odenton. We were playing with the Spring Kit (whichever one had the full-art Leela Patel card as a prize), which I had already won a tournament for a couple of weeks ago, so I decided to go for something different.

For the Runner, I tried to build a Professor deck. I had hoped to take advantage of all the new tools available for Shaper, and tried to build around Brahman and the Cerberus icebreakers, thinking I could use Brahman to reset them at will, and then use a card like John Masanori to redraw them, and maybe Savor-Faire to replay them as needed. Of course, a strategy like this is expensive, but I hoped that running every type of economy possible would help make it doable.

On the Corp side, I attempted to run Palana Foods: Sustainable Growth. The goal here was to build a lot of servers, force the Runner to draw a lot of cards, get a SanSan out, and try to fast advance agendas. Occasionally, I would try to sneak out a Chronos Project and score it after the Runner had filled up his heap.

The tournament ended up having 12 players, I think. Pretty good turnout.

Round one, I played against Joey, who I had beaten in the finals of the last tournament. He swore to get his revenge, and... well, I let him. He was using Harmony Medtech as his Corp, and I really could get nothing going (I did not draw any icebreakers, or any cards to go get icebreakers the entire game), and he was able to win easily (6-0, I think). We switched, and I took my Corp deck against Ken "Express" Tenma. He installed Desperado early, and ran ever server I installed. He quickly found the key cards I needed to leave out there, trashed them, and hit me with three account siphons, ensuring he had money. I believe I managed to get an agenda scored, but he easily took the rest of them. I end round one 0-2.

Round two, I played Rob, who is the person I have played Netrunner against the most (and it's not even close). I started playing as Corp against his Hayley deck (Hayley is his favorite Runner, so I have seen many different styles of Hayley deck from him). I keep him drawing a lot of cards; I set up from time to time, scoring one or two agendas in spurts until he gets in to trash my SanSans. I manage to score a Chronos Project mid-game, hurting his potential use of Levy to maintain any sort of momentum, and end up taking the game from him.

We switch sides, and I play Professor against his Foundry deck. Once again, I do not draw icebreakers I need, and he takes the game easily. Just could not get the Professor going! I am down to 1-3 after two rounds.

As an aside- in all three rounds of this tournament, I was the first player done- so at this point Rob and I played another game using my Professor deck, he could not draw ice he needed, and I scored a bunch of agendas off of R&D. So I did manage a win, but in the least skilled way possible.

Round three, I am matched against Cas, who was flush from winning his FIRST EVER game of Netrunner (go Cas! Whooo!). I start with the Professor, and he ran Argus Security. Here, I actually get things up and running- I get two dogs out along with Brahman, and get through his servers (eventually making decent R&D runs) and take the win.

Switching, I face off against his Gabe deck. He immediately Account Siphons me turn one. Then again on Turn 2. Then manages to score a couple points of agendas from my hand, and then I start getting set up, starting to score a few agendas of my own. I am down 6-4 when time is finally called, so I get a modified loss. I was actually starting to get in good position, but Cas was doing a good job keeping me from getting too much momentum. It could have gone either way, but really, any small misstep would have cost me the game at this point, so taking that loss was not too hard a pill to swallow.

I ended the tournament 2-4, which is perfectly fine, given that I was not bringing my top stuff. Unfortunately, I do not recall who won. I am confident I will never bother playing the Professor again (I tried him quite a bit when he originally came out as well). Just too little consistency to be fun. Other than that, it was a good time, and I look forward to the next tournament.
