What a week for LCGs!

Man, so much great stuff going on this week!

The first Data Pack for Netrunner, What Lies Ahead was released (spoilers on this site).  In addition, another one was announced!

With releases, the next Warhammer: Invasion Battle Pack was released as well (also spoiled here).

And as for news- the next Deluxe Expansion for Call of Cthulhu, another Force Pack for Star Wars, and the reprint (FINALLY) of the Clash of Arms cycle for Game of Thrones??

Not only is this year ending with a bang (ie, Star Wars is being released soon), but man, next year is going to start off incredibly!

Gaming on 12/05/12

This won't be terribly exciting, but I did manage to teach a friend at work how to play Android: Netrunner, yesterday  Two quick games, with him using my Shaper deck, and with me using my Haas-Bioroid deck.  He ended up winning both games (the first game 7-0), but that's partially because I played intentionally sloppy a little to let him see the mechanics.

The game itself doesn't matter- the important thing is that I'm expanding the game, ever so slightly, by teaching it to new people.  In the last six months, I've managed to get a new Game of Thrones player, and new Lord of the Rings player, and with luck, a new Netrunner player.  Maybe I'll make that a goal for 2013.  Increase the LCG total player base by ten people, or something.  Might be a fun challenge.

Gaming on November 3rd, 2012

Played a few games today.

The goal was to teach Frans about the game, but sadly, that didn't happen, as I ended up getting 'taught a lesson', so to speak.

Games 1 and 2, I played a Martell Icon removal deck (with Quentyn Martell as my agenda) against Frans' Stark Siege of Winterfell deck.  Game 1, I ended up with a mediocre start, and Frans' deck worked smoothly, taking me down (15-0, maybe?).  Game 2, more of my deck got working, but it wasn't enough, as Frans seemed to have answers for most things.  This one ended 15-9, in his favor.  I like my deck, but man, it's just too slow.  I think I need to drop a character or two, and add more cheap income locations.  I always felt like I was struggling to get going, so having something to speed me up will be nice.

Game 3, I ran a Greyjoy deck, using the Kings of Winter agenda, with the intent to choke his income.  We ended up having to cut the game short (after 7 rounds), but the choke part was working.  Unfortunately, I was doing just as good a job hurting myself, and I think I ended the game with only 3 power (Frans, I believe, had 2).  If we have more time, we may try giving that game another go.

So.... 0-2 on the day, but I did have fun.  Can't wait to get some time to tweak these decks!

Finally, official word on Star Wars deckbuilding, as well as example pods

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3707

I was a little disappointed when I heard abuot the way they are doing deckbuilding, as were most people, from what I gathered.  But that said, after a bit of thinking, I'm looking forward to it, and the designer in this article basically highlights the reasons why.  I think it's going to be an interesting take on the old style of doing things, and new and interesting ways to do things always have the potential to be interesting.

Man, I can't wait for this game to come out.

FFG Posts for 6/18/12

Yeah, I'll probably end up doing this whole thing monthly- I just don't have the time otherwise.

General:
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3318

New and updated tournament rules for three of the games!

A Game of Thrones:
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3312

Report from the Joust Champion for the Days of Ice and Fire 2012 tournament, including the deck list (a Martell Maester's Path deck).  Pretty good, and interesting article.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3313

Report from the Melee Champion.  Another good article from the point of view of the winning player.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3322

More highlights from the Days of Ice and Fire tournament.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3325

Announcing the new Chapter Pack, A Roll of the Dice, and a card from it: Old Bill Bone.  Looks like a great combo with House Dayne cards (and Starfall), which is mentioned.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3334

Among the best news in the past month: FINALLY reprinting the Ravens cycle for Game of Thrones!  Finally, the cards based around Winter and Summer will be available for everyone, and some of the popular decks (read: Greyjoy Choke), will be available for everyone.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3350

Not as great as the previous one, this is still GREAT news- the deluxe expansions are all being reprinted.  Since I haven't been able to find a copy of 'The Kings of the Storm' for a long time, this is very very good news.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3354

Valar Dohaeris is now available.  There's a review of the cards on cardgamedb.com if you want to see what's coming in the Chapter Pack, and what players think of the cards.

Call of Cthulhu:
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3311

Some ideas for the card Corrupted Midwife from the Ebla Restored Asylum Pack.  Some interesting ideas, but nothing earth shattering, if you ask me.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3326

And the announcement that the Asylum Pack is now available (it's definitely in stores).  Even reveals another card, Professor of Folklore, which looks like an awesome addition.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3343

Tournament report from the Munich Regionals, from the 3rd place player.  Contains a deck list.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3360

Preview of the next Asylum Pack, 'Lost Rites'.  Mentioned- two new conspiracies, which have a different ordering of the icon struggles!  Conspiracies that may actually get used, even.  Of course, Hastur gets The King in Yellow Folio, which could really screw with a lot of the investigator decks.  Regardless, exciting stuff on the horizon.

The Lord of the Rings:
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3319

A look a Asfaloth from the Foundations of Stone Adventure Pack, and some (fairly obvious) points dealing with it.  Still, good to see a preview of what's in the new pack!

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3329

Some previews from the Foundations of Stone Adventure Pack.  Path of Need, for instance, looks like a VERY sweet card.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3344

Preview of the Hero from 'Foundations of Stone': Glorfindel!  And not just any old hero, is he.  With great stats, only 5 starting threat, and a drawback that can be easily negated (they link to Light of Valinor in the article, which is a perfect way to avoid it), he's going to be seeing a LOT of play.

Warhammer:Invasion:
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3327

Notice that Fragments of Power is now available (again, I've seen it in stores).  Preview of a card: Snotling Invasion.  That's going to be a lot of fun to use!

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3332

Preview of the next pack, 'The Accursed Dead'.  The card, Rebuild the Hold, is an interesting one- one of the first (only?) to allow you to remove burned markers from your hold!  That can keep a Dwarf player in the game a VERY long time.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3346

Focus on Purged By Flame from the upcoming 'The Accursed Dead' pack, including two high-elf decks, both of which look awesome (and one of which, the one based off Eltharion, I've been trying to use myself), and both of which look to use this new card.

FFG Posts for 5/22/12

Got a little sick, which really screws with my ability to blog.  Regardless, here's the things off FFG from the last few days.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3284

Warhammer: Invasion card spotlight, on Dance to Loec (a neutral Wood Elf tactic).  Some interesting thoughts, as well as a pretty cool deck idea using developments, Wood Elves, Dwarfs, and aggression to take a quick win.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3287

More information about the A Long Dark Adventure Pack.  Discusses some uses of the new hero included, Hama.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3293

Preview of the next Chapter Pack for A Game of Thrones, Valar Dohaeris.  Talks a lot about Castle Battlements, and how to get some use out of them.  The extra defense for your locations will be really handy against some decks.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3296

Preview of the next Asylum Pack for Call of Cthulhu, Ebla Restored.  Focuses on the card 'The Gate of the Silver Key' for Yog-Sothoth, and ways you can abuse it.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3297

Strategies involving a new ally from the upcoming Lord of the Rings Adventure Pack (Foundations of Stone).  For some reason, I can't see the ally, so I can't figure out how excited I should be, but since my only successful solo deck uses the Zigil Miner/Gildor Inglorion combo for a ton of resources, and the ally, Imladris Stargazer apparently works with that, I have no choice but to be pretty excited regardless.  Also, mention is made of an error made in the rules insets for the last two Adventure Packs.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3298

Card Spotlight for a new Dwarf card from an upcoming Pack, which seems like a pretty good card.  Probably would make a great card combination with Grombrindal.

FFG Posts for 5/12/12

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3276

Discussion of the newest Asylum Pack, and how the contents can help some Miskatonic Decks.  Also gives an example of a Miskatonic Rush deck using some of the new cards.  Also contains some strategies and combos for using Dr. Mya Badry from the new pack.

Next LCG announced!

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3272

NETRUNNER!

From the link:

"Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of Android: Netrunner! Originally designed by Richard Garfield and released in 1996, Netrunner was widely hailed as one of the greatest customizable card games of its era. Now, with Android: Netrunner, players can look forward to revisiting the game’s exciting play… or experiencing it for the first time.
Android: Netrunner is an asymmetrical Living Card Game™ for two players. Set in the cyberpunk future of Android, the game pits a megacorporation and its massive resources against the subversive talents of lone runners. Corporation players try to score points by advancing their agendas, and netrunners try to score points by breaking through the corporation’s defenses and stealing valuable data. The first player to seven points wins the game, but not likely before he suffers some brain damage or bad publicity."

I played a lot of Netrunner when it was made by Wizards of the Coast, and almost always had a blast.  It's a game where you feel like no matter which side of the board you're on, every decision directly influences not only you, but what your opponent does.  Seeing this re-produced... especially as an LCG, makes me very very very happy!

Now, of course, if they could get the Star Wars one out as well, I'd be double happy, but I'll take whatever I can get!

FFG Posts for 5/10/12

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3259

Preview of The Long Dark Adventure Pack.  A bunch of GREAT new Dwarf stuff.  Ever My Heart Rises is going to be pretty handy in some of the quests.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3264

A little bit of preview from the upcoming Fragments of Power Battle Pack, mainly focused on the use of the new High Elf support, Tor Elyr (which prevents your opponent from targeting other High Elf support cards).  That's going to be pretty helpful in keeping some of these High Elf decks ticking.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3271

A notice that the new Chapter Pack, Valar Morghulis is available.  I've seen this in stores, so I know it's out there.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3274

Information on the next Chapter Pack for a Game of Thrones, The House of Black and White.  New Arya Stark, the House of Black and White (as a House Stark location?), and mention of changing you and your opponent's characters.  Pretty interesting looking!

Very exciting news today!

New Asylum pack for Call of Cthulhu.  Next month, hopefully I'll get the game!

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3251

Reprinting several of the old packs is exciting enough, but moving them to the 60-card format (so that each pack has 3 of all the cards you need to play) is doubly so.  Now, you can go and pick up these older packs, and get a bunch of sweet cards.  Return of the Others is my first goal- would love to get my hands on Balerion the Black!

Discussion of an upcoming Battle Pack, Shield of the Gods, for Warhammer: Invasion.  The card focused on is Shield of Aeons, which can actually be put on a Legend, making them really tough to get rid of, or a hero to make them terrific at defending a zone.

Finally picked up Game of Thrones!

Which means that finally, I can start appreciating the Game of Thrones articles and podcasts and websites out there, as well as the game itself.  About time!

I've already started tinkering with a House Stark deck and a House Targaryen deck.  Can't wait to actually play some games!

All that's left to start is Call of Cthulhu, but that may have to wait a bit (maybe I'll ask for it for my birthday, haha).

Watchers in the Water is now available for Lord of the Rings.  The new Aragorn looks really sweet, and the Dwarven attachment they show (Legacy of Durin) is going to be a nice addition.

Card spotlight for Warhammer: Invasion, from the Fragments of Power pack.  The card is Swift-Moving Storm, which gives all your units the Scout keyword, really helping with the hand-destruction theme from a few articles ago.

Some information and spoilers about a new Battle Pack (Rising Dawn).  The cards mentioned all seem pretty awesome.  New Legend for High Elves (Eltharion), a new Neutral Order unit to make quests really efficient, and a Neutral Destruction unit to hinder your opponents' quests.  Really really sweet stuff.

Attempts at solitaire Lord of the Rings, 4/17/12

Well, I tried to play 'Passage Through Mirkwood' solitaire this evening, just to see how it would go.  I figure that with its difficulty rating of '1', it would be a good warmup for trying some of the more challenging scenarios.

Absolutely not.

First, I tried two games using just the Tactics cards.  Gimli, Legolas, and Thalin, with the Tactics cards from the core set plus the first couple of Adventure Packs.  Couldn't even get out of the first quest area.  Starting with 3 threat means that you'll almost never get any progress right away, given the starting location and Forest Spider, and if you run into even a small rut of locations, you're done for (the monsters you can fairly easily kill, thankfully).

I figured, hey, let's try something else.  Let's go with the Leadership cards!  Aragorn, Theodred, and Gloin took a crack at this quest, and despite handling themselves better, they didn't make it any farther.

Next time I give it a shot, I'll probably at the very least take an actual constructed deck, with cards from two supporting types.  My mono-color decks certainly don't fly solitaire, haha.

Sneaking Past The Watcher in the Water, Part Three

Gives an example deck list for utilizing the new Secrecy mechanic.  What is possibly the most interesting to me is both that new Aragorn hero card (reset your threat!?), and the Sword that Was Broken Attachment.  Very cool looking stuff.

Welcome!

Greetings, greetings!

So, let's cut to the chase.  This blog is about LCGs- namely, a type of CCG that doesn't used a randomized distribution method.  With all the various blogs and resources out there relating to the various CCGs, I felt that there was a distinct lack of resources about this important, awesome subgenre, and I wanted to make sure it was addressed.

So, what games does this site cover?  At present, there are only 4, but more are sure to come:
  • A Game of Thrones LCG
  • Call of Cthulhu LCG
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game
  • Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game
There is also a future addition already mentioned (Star Wars: The Card Game), that should be out in later 2012.  Notice- all of these games are released by Fantasy Flight Games.  They seem, for the moment, to be the only company to adopt this release style.  Here's hoping more companies follow suit.

For now, I only play the last two of those games, but I'm hoping to move into Game of Thrones soon, and Call of Cthulhu soon after.

I'm not a very good player yet, I'll freely admit that, but I hope with some practice, and spending enough time engrossing myself in it, that I'll not only get better, but will simultaneously provide a good resource for people playing these fantastic games.

What can you expect from this place?  For now, primarily news and lists of the cards in each of the sets.  I hope to eventually get good enough to put up strategy articles and deck-building advice.  With some more experience and skill, I'll handle tournament coverage and maybe a rules question or two.  Eventually, I would also love to support fictional cards and variants.

Finally, this isn't going to be much if it's just me alone- if anyone else has a love for these games, even if only just one, let me know!
